The Friends of Suikerbosrand work to sustain the vitality of the Suikerbosrand Game Reserve; by respecting its spirit, highlighting its long history of human habitation, celebrating its cultural heritage and museum, protecting its biodiversity and promoting it as a place for all to enjoy safe outdoor activities and have transformative nature experiences.

Named after the sugarbush ‐ Protea caffra ‐ the reserve covers an area of 19 000 ha. including extensions and is characterised by meandering hiking trails, scenic vistas, historic farmhouses, pre-colonial stone circles and a rich variety of animal and plant species.

Explore Suikerbosrand’s ridges, valleys and plains on foot, bicycle, or by vehicle. If hiking, cycling, or driving around is not your thing, pack a picnic basket and enjoy the gorgeous views of the Suikerbosrand.
Planting & other projects
Restore the medicinal garden as an educational resource.
Planting days are regularly planned by the Friends Of Suikerbosrand.
Assistance is also needed with upgrading the educational signage.
We are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join as contributing(time or financial) or associate members(one survey a year is all we ask) in promoting and preserving our Suikerbosrand.

Stargazing Weekend
Escape the bright city lights that make viewing stars difficult. Suikerbosrand offers premium dark skies for stargazing close to Jo’burg. Join the Wits Planetarium for a tour of the Universe by telescope and the naked eye. Includes campfire, potjie and option to stay overnight.

From Johannesburg, take the N3 highway towards Heidelberg. Take the R550 (Kliprivier/Lenasia) off-ramp and turn right, across the highway. After 13.5km turn left to the reserve (large silver Suikerbosrand sign). Spend a day here, hike overnight or book available accommodation.
It is advisable to bring water bottles and food.
Only card payments accepted at gate - no cash transactions
